On Tuesday, March 11, another daytime burglary took place in East Hills (on Cheshire Way). We have had several incidents lately in our neighborhood. Please be on the look out for suspicious activity, persons or vehicles. If you see anything, please call the Colonie Police (911) at once.
Earlier this year the Police Department provided each homeowner with a list of steps residents can take to help prevent themselves from becoming victims of burglary.
- Lock windows and doors before leaving the house or going to bed
- Keep garage doors closed and locked
- Activate security systems or consider installing security systems
- Leave exterior and interior lights on
- Motion activated lights are useful for outside
- Timers can be used to control inside lights
- Trim landscaping that could be used by criminals to hide from view
- Keep a list of valuables (many use a video camera to inventory their home) and store the list outside of your home
- Don't hide the spare key on the property - leave with neighbor or relative
- Don't allow daily deliveries to accumulate
- If going to be away for an extended period - contact the Colonie Police at 783-2744 to add your house and information to our House Check program, cancel newspapers and mail delivery, arrange to have property maintained (lawn mowed, snow cleared, etc.)
- Contact police immediately if suspicious activity, persons or vehicles are observed
The police department also has a home security form online for your personal use. It can help identify security issues in your own home. Click this link to access and print that form: Colonie Police Department Home Security Survey
