East Hills Blvd. Sidewalk Situation

If you've attempted to use the sidewalks along East Hills Blvd., you've probably encountered large cracks in the concrete as well as several slippery areas from summer algae/moss and winter ice.  The icing is severe enough that it sometimes encroaches onto EHB.  E-mails have been sent to the Town Highway Department over the past several seasons, but the problem has not been addressed.  Instead, the Town has decided to close the sidewalk in places.  We feel that residents should not have to walk in the street to avoid problems with the sidewalks.

To spur action, a letter has been sent directly to Paula Mahan requesting remediation in early 2012.  If you have questions or comments on this concern, feel free to send them to the Town of Colonie Highway Department, which is responsible for addressing the sidewalk issues.

  1. I hope your letter is met with better success than mine was several years ago. Runoff from EHB pools severely at the bottom of my driveway and after a letter to the town supervisor requesting action, the Highway Department spent the next two years explaining why it's my fault.

They were not receptive to multiple requests to grade the road properly so that water actually runs into the storm sewer grates. Instead, they say that I should eliminate the runoff from my yard, as if that's the only route by which water reaches EHB! They did move my mailbox so that my mail only gets drenched part of the time instead of all of the time...

Sounds like the closing of the sidewalks is a similar approach; unfortunately, it's not very helpful. Susan, if you want specifics to bolster your case that this has been going on for years, contact me and I can provide copies of the letters that I sent.
